Sifu Rawcliffe provides close protection for Miss Cynthia Rothrock during her stay in the UK including appearances on 'The Word' TV show and as guest of honour at the World Martial Arts Extravaganza at the NEC, Birmingham.

June ~ 24 hour Martial Arts Marathon for Coventry Society for the Blind

During one of this years Hong Kong trips the Ip Chun Wing Chun Kuen Martial Arts Association is formed. Sifu Rawcliffe receives one of the first certificates and is appointed certifying officer and webmaster. Whilst in Hong Kong Sifu Rawcliffe visits his first teacher, Sifu Stephen Chan, in Hung Hom, Kowloon.

Whilst in Hong Kong, Sifu Rawcliffe was awarded an instructors certificate by the Yip Chun Martial Arts Association (no longer functioning) and awarded an Official Representative of Yip Man Martial Arts Association certificate.

Sifu Rawcliffe partnered Master Ip Chun in the photo shoot for the Wing Chun skill & Philosophy book.

Sept ~ During one of his Hong Kong stays this year, Sifu Rawcliffe was awarded an Instructors certificate by the Ving Tsun Athletic Association, one of these trips included another visit to Foshan, China where he visited Pan Nam.

Awarded membership of now defuct Martial Arts Commission.

February ~ Following one of his seminars at the MWCK, Master Ip Chun gave Sifu Rawcliffe a personal invitation to come to Hong Kong to train with him, an opportunity that was not to be missed.

May ~ Sifu Rawcliffe's first visit to Hong Kong to train with Master Ip Chun; six weeks of intensive one on one tuition, three times a day at Master Ip Chun's home. Trip included a visit to Foshan, China to give a demonstration at the Ching Wu Assocaiation. Sifu Rawcliffe was made a Permanent Member of both the Ving Tsun Athletic Association and Yip Man Martial Arts Association.

Sifu Rawcliffe was so impressed with his depth of knowledge and openness that at least once a year since then Master Ip Chun has been invited to give at a seminar at the school.

March ~ Sifu Rawcliffe opened the Birmingham branch of the Simon Lau Academy in Hall Green, Birmingham, where he still teaches today.

Jan ~ Sifu Rawcliffe moved to Birmingham and began training privately every Sunday with Sifu Simon Lau in London.

Sifu Rawcliffe first met Master Ip Chun at the opening of the Simon Lau Martial Arts Academy in Albany Street, London. Sifu Rawcliffe was then studying with Sifu Brian Hook, an instructor for Sifu Lau in Leeds.

Already a 2nd Dan in ShotoKan Karate, Sifu Rawcliffe returned to the UK after a couple of years working as a close protection officer in Tunisia, North Africa and later Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia, looking after a wealthy businessman and his family. He began his Wing Chun training whilst recovering from a serious hamstring injury following a chance meeting with Sifu Stephen Chan who was training at the Tottenham Court Road YMCA. Sifu Rawcliffe began taking private lessons with Sifu Chan until he returned to Hong Kong at the end of 1980.
